Git reports fatal errors for ambiguous arguments:
```
fatal: ambiguous argument 'refs/a...refs/b': unknown revision or path not in the working tree.
Use '--' to separate paths from revisions, like this:
'git <command> [<revision>...] -- [<file>...]'
```
So the `--` separator is necessary in some cases.
